The Effect of Ostial Reopening or Antibiotic Therapy on the Change of Sinus mucosa of Experimental Maxillary Sinusitis in Rabbits

Abstract

|
The aim of this study was to compare ostial reopening procedure and antibiotic therapy in acute maxillary sinusitis. Maxillary sinusitis was induced in rabbits by blocking the sinus ostium with sterile cotton and by inoculating Streptococcus
pneumoniae
into the maxillary sinus. The cotton was removed in ostial reopening group and systemic antibiotic was administrated with closed ostium in antibiotic therapy group. Streptococcus pneumoniae and Pasteurella multocida were isolated from pus in the
sinus.
Two weeks following ostial reopening procedure and initial antibiotic injection, the degree of epithelial ulceration and inflammatory cell infiltration by light microscopy was significantly milder in the antibiotic injection group(P<0.05). Four
weeks
later, there was statistically significant difference in the degree of epithelial ulceration between ostial reopening group and antibiotic injection group(p<0.05). It is suggested that systemic antibiotic injection is more effective in recovery
of
acute
sinusitis.
